Hamburger used to be a food to which I would pair beer rather than wine, but two summers ago, I picked up a few bottles of 1997 Ironstone Cabernet Franc and had one open when I was grilling some burgers. I poured a glass and was surprised at how well it accompanied the food. Of course, I wasn't using any ketchup (I'm not sure whether any wine would go well with ketchup). Esquin Wine Merchants is currently offering a special on the 2001 vintage: $7.99 per bottle. The description they include has that all important feature, "chewy":
A super value. Rich black cherry and smoke aromas, bold and penetrating, with a ripe, chewy character, reminiscent of a Chinon from the Loire Valley.
Since spring seems to have sprung here in the Pacific Northwest, I may stock up on some of this burger wine.
